The federal trial will begin next year for the mass murderer.
Federal prosecutors recently announced that the federal trial for Patrick Crusius has been scheduled for early next year. The mass shooter drove to a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, in 2019, where he opened fire on local shoppers with a rifle. Before he committed the act, he drafted a document that characterized Hispanic immigration to the United States as an “invasion” of Texas.
Crusius is being charged with 23 counts of a hate crime resulting in death and 23 counts of use of a firearm to commit murder, one for each those who were killed in his attack. He was originally indicted in 2020, but his trial was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Federal prosecutors will not seek the death penalty against him, though he does face capital murder charges in the state of Texas.
